These are some of the common activities you can do in your daily life to help conserve energy and help the environment. What about the bigger picture? What about the opportunity to change the world on a much larger scale?

Well Kentucky has just made it a little easier for those companies who are trying to do just that.

In October, the University of Kentucky broke ground on what will become the university’s first certified green building. The university spent $19.8 million to develop the renewable energy laboratory. The laboratory will allow the university’s Center for Applied Energy Research to expand its research efforts devoted to Kentucky’s renewable energy industries.

These new resources can be used in conjunction with green technology companies to help boost them through the research and development stage. Whether you’re operating your business in Lexington, Elizabethtown, or Paducah you have access to key research and development staff and tools to get you to the commercialization stage. Not only do these resources increase the credibility of your company, but allow easy access for developmental and strategic planning trips.

Additionally, working with a university can open your company up to new funding opportunities such as STTR(Small Business Technology Transfer Research) investments. You may also qualify for a Kentucky matching program where the state may double the STTR funding. Take a look at the company NuForm who is centered on technology developed at the University of Kentucky.

http://www.bizlex.com/Articles-c-2010-04-27-92359.113117_From_waste_to_efficiency.html

The Center is has a plethora of different energy conservation projects that focus on the optimal use of Kentucky’s and the nation’s energy resources for the benefit of its people. The Center will now be able to help energy companies focus more on projects related to biomass and biofuels, electrochemical power sources, and distributed solar energy technologies.

Whether it is developing new biofuel product, for our vehicles, using algae or using fly ash to develop a new form of concrete, the Center is truly a leading resource in Kentucky’s push towards a more green state.

For more information on the Center for Applied Energy Research please visit their website at http://www.caer.uky.edu/

Or contact Richard Davis at EntrePaducah at (270) 443-1746 or rdavis@entrepaducah.com

EntrePaducah Connects Cyber Security and Small Business

Over the last decade, computer and IT security has become exponentially more complicated. Viruses, hackers, trojans, malware, identity theft, and spam bots...all of these are issues users face on daily. So can we effectively protect ourselves?
The short answer is no. That would be about as practical as trying to create a 100% crime free world. But don’t be overly-alarmed...there is hope for those of us who may not have the knowledge of Bill Gates or Kevin Mitnick.

In reality,96% of data breaches in 2009-2010 were avoidable through simple or intermediate controls. Small things like not downloading software from random third party sites, or actually reading thoroughly the Terms of Service when you sign up for something.

A lot of good information can be found in books or on blogs, but ultimately it’s hard to know which sources to trust. That's why on Thursday, Oct. 21st EntrePaducah will host a Cyber Security Seminar . Join us in the Adams Room of the Paducah Expo Center a 12:30 PM, then stay for the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce Buy Local Trade Show starting at 2:00.

Our panel includes Special Agent Joseph Ranieri from the Louisville Division of the FBI. Agent Ranieri represents the squad responsible for a full array of cyber crimes including internet fraud, child pornography, and both criminal and national security intrusions. The unit covers cyber crime all across the state of Kentucky.

Also on the panel is John Truitt, CEO of Kalleo Technologies. Kalleo is a Paducah-based IT company that services small and medium-sized businesses. Kalleo focuses on a variety of technology protection including proactive monitoring, continuous support, and comprehensive service.

The seminar is free and is being offered as a public service by EntrePaducah for small businesses in the Paducah area.

Reservations are suggested at (270)443-1746 or at info1@entrepaducah.com.

(*Written by EntrePaducah Tech Concierge Richard Davis)

Entrepreneur 101: How to start a Business

Google "How to start a business".
In less than a second, you'll get 742 million results. So, you just thought it was easy to start a new business!
Actually, it's not that complicated with the right advice from the right partner. You'll also notice that the number 1 (unpaid) listing is for the Small Business Administration (SBA), and that's a good thing. Your tax dollars fund the SBA counseling programs, including their resource partners. The SBA's local resource partner is the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Murray State University.
EntrePaducah, in cooperation with the Murray State SBDC, are partnering to offer "Entrepreneur 101: How to Start a Business." The first of these one-night learning sessions is Monday, September 27th at the Commerce Center, 4th & Kentucky, in downtown Paducah from 6:00PM-8:00PM.
Entrepreneur 101 is designed to be an overview of the steps you'll take to get started owning your own business. Obviously, we can't cover everything in one night but you'll learn the basics and go home with materials to help walk you through the process. We plan to conduct these sessions the fourth Monday evening of all odd-numbered months (September, November, January, March, May, July). The topics will be the same each month, but anyone is welcome to attend multiple sessions.
Topics we'll discuss include: How to write a business plan; Managing your cash flow; Basics of financial statements; How to register and/or license your business in Kentucky-McCracken County-City of Paducah.
We'll also offer an Assessment Tool for you to use in determining whether pursuing business ownership is even the right career move for you.
Chris Wooldridge, MSU's SBDC Director, and Terry Reeves of EntrePaducah will be your hosts for the evening. With Chris and Terry leading the group, we can promise it will be informative and fun!
The session is free, but reservations are required to insure program materials. To register or for more information, phone (270) 443-1746, or, email info1@entrepaducah.com.

Biz workshop for artists...the marriage of art and business!

Artists are artists. Business people are business people. There's a misconception that the two worlds can't co-exist.

Wrong.

Some 40 full and part-time professional artists joined EntrePaducah and the Kentucky Arts Council for a day-long business workshop. The sub-title for the session was "Providing essentials for a strong art business" which was truly the purpose of the day.

Paducah has made its intentions known to be a first-class location for artists to create and sell their work. The Artist Relocation Program, Lowertown Arts and Music Festival and other programs are just two of the many popular events held to celebrate the city's attention to the arts.

The reality, however, is that artists need to eat and pay rent just like everyone else. Starving artists are great for novels, but earning a consistent (and hopefully prosperous) living on your creations is still the American dream.

Responding to a number of requests, EntrePaducah enlisted the services of the Kentucky Arts Council and the Small Business Development Center at Murray State University to produce a business workshop designed specifically for people who make their living selling their art.
Topics ranged from Business Planning, Marketing (traditional and social media), Sales, and resources available from the government and from other artist-related groups. Our artists seemed to particularly enjoy hearing from guest speakers who run successful galleries in other parts of the state.

Our thanks to our presenters: Chris Wooldridge of the Small Business Development Center at MSU; artist Marcie Christenson; artist David Toczko; Tim Glotzbach of Berea College; and Mark Johnson, manager of the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development’s Small and Minority Business Branch and its Business Information Clearinghouse. You are always welcome in Paducah!

EntrePaducah also thanks the Kentucky Arts Council for helping to coordinate the event and the Maiden Alley Cinema/River Discovery Center for their great facility.
Finally, thanks to all the artists who attended the event and gave us their feedback on this session and suggestions for future workshops.
We truly want our artists to succeed in Paducah and are happy to meet one-on-one with anyone interested in starting an art business, or needing help with their existing business.

Business Workshop for Professional Artists

Do you paint, sculpt, write, shoot, play, quilt, or weave for a living?

Do you consider the "business" side of being an artist something you want to do better?

EntrePaducah and the Kentucky Arts Council invite you to join us for a Business Workshop for Professional Artists. We're working with the KAC to present a program designed for you...the professional, working artist.

Here's the lineup:
+Small Business Assistance: Information provided on business regulations, licenses, permits and resources through the Business Information Clearinghouse program, business planning/funding and using the internet to market an arts and crafts based business.

+Developing (and working!) Around the year 2000, Terry took on a partner…that’s when his wife Linda started with S&W.

Along the way, S&W Productions has picked up more than 100 awards of excellence such as Telly’s (the equivalent of an Emmy in advertising circles)…Vision Awards; Communicator Awards; Videography Awards and Addy Awards. They were the first production company in Paducah to fully embrace digital video technology…from camera to finished product…and today, their equipment remains network quality and above. They produce corporate and industrial videos; TV commercials; wedding videos; legal videos; DVD duplication and Political Consulting.

In 1991, visitors to Paducah’s AQS Quilt Show began getting wonderful previews of attractions and recaps of the day’s events via the Quilt Channel. As an experienced visitor to shows around the country, I can personally attest that many trade-specific visitor channels have come and gone…but S&W’s has endured. Not only is it an entrepreneurial venture stemmed from the quilt show, but it adds polish and professionalism to the image of our city.

Terry tells me that he loves being an entrepreneur because every day is a new challenge. He says he loves the fact that when a client wants something, he can make it happen immediately without having to jump through hoops. He says he loves the relationships he’s built with clients through the years…that it’s not just a job, it’s a passion.

Please join me in honoring our July Entrepreneur of the Month Terry and Linda Schmitt of S&W Productions!

June 2010 Entrepreneur of the Month

(*pictured: Tammy Zimmerman,Payments Plus; Terry Reeves, EntrePaducah)

CHARGE IT!
PRICELESS!
DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!

What state of mind are we now in…that’s right, credit cards.

June's Entrepreneur of the Month, Tammy Zimmerman, is President and Founder of Payment Plus, Inc. Payment Plus is a Paducah-based payment processing provider that offers a broad spectrum of business services to customers from coast to coast.

Tammy has more than 25 years of experience in the banking and credit card industry. Before founding Payment Plus, she was a founding member of NOVA Information Systems, Inc., (now Elavon) in Atlanta. Prior to that, Tammy spent several years at National Data Corporation as an account executive, and was the first woman at NDC to be recognized as Sales Person of the Year.

She currently serves as co-chair of Elavon’s MSP Advisory Committee and is on the Advisory board of ControlScan, both based in Atlanta.

Tammy also gives back to her community through her work with various youth programs…and is founder of the “One of His Sheep” program.

Payment Plus will soon be building a new facility in Paducah’s Information Age Park which will give them a new platform for growth.

She says her greatest satisfaction in being an entrepreneur in Paducah is the investment it makes in the future of people in our community.

Tammy, we thank you for that investment and we’re proud to honor you as June's Entrepreneur of the Month presented by EntrePaducah and the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce.

Federal Reserve speaker a hit with local entrepreneurs

Julie Stackhouse, Senior VP of the STL Federal Reserve, speaks to local entrepreneurs and financial leaders.

EntrePaducah's primary mission is to help small business startups launch their businesses. We help them find resources, we counsel them regarding their business and marketing plans, and often we help them network with other entrepreneurs with common goals.
Occasionally, however, we need to stop and thank the entrepreneurs and community leaders whose entrepreneurial investments allow them to give generously in support of their community. They are the people who often make anonymous gifts that go toward better educational opportunities...or quality of life resources that we all enjoy.
These are the folks who don't always have time for a "thank you" lunch or dinner...and deserve a little more than a thank you card.
So, EntrePaducah wanted to offer the gift of knowledge, hence, the launch of our Entrepreneurial Advancement Series.
Since 2008, the economy is a daily issue. We watch the markets. We watch the unemployment rate. We watch our own budgets. And, we watch how the government watches our money through the Federal Reserve.
Julie Stackhouse is Senior VP of the Federal Reserve Bank in St. Louis...and the first speaker to appear for our Entrepreneurial Advancement Series.
Wednesday night (5-26-10), Julie took guests through the beginnings of the fatal "housing bubble" to a current day look at the regulations that ensued. She also offered a timely explanation of the chaotic financial situation in Europe and how it could eventually affect the United States' economy.
So, one more thanks to our local entrepreneurs and financial leaders...we hope to see you again soon at the next program!

June 1 EntreForum: "Open Mic" Night

If you've attended EntrePaducah’s EntreForum programs, you've typically been on the receiving end of information regarding business startups. June’s EntreForum turns the tables with an “Open Mic” format.
Small business owners and entrepreneurs considering a startup business are invited to express their views or ask questions about issues related to starting businesses in Paducah and McCracken County.
“EntreForum is designed to be an educational format for entrepreneurs. We’ve provided programs on business planning, marketing, insurance, etc. in the past, but now it’s our time to learn from the people we serve,” said EntrePaducah Concierge Terry Reeves. “We won’t have all answers to all questions at this program, but as a small business resource we’ll do our best to guide entrepreneurs toward the answers they seek.”
Attendees are also welcome to offer suggestions on issues of importance to them. Comments will be forwarded to the appropriate person or agency that can provide answers.
The EntreForum program will be held at IVS Website Development, 612 Broadway, downtown Paducah. Refreshments will be served at 5:15 PM followed by the program at 5:30.
Admission is free, but reservations are requested by email, info1@entrepaducah.com, or phone (270)443-1746.
EntrePaducah is the central source for entrepreneurial business development and support in Paducah and McCracken County. Through a partnership with the Kentucky Department of Commercialization & Innovation, EntrePaducah also offers grant and loan opportunities for technology-driven startups.
Strategic and financial partners of EntrePaducah are: City of Paducah; McCracken Fiscal Court; Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce; Greater Paducah Economic Development Council; and Murray State University.

May 2010 Entrepreneur of the Month

(L to R): Paducah Chamber Board Chair Helen Sims; Gayle McLeod, Petter Supply VP-Sales; Terry Reeves, EntrePaducah)

This month’s Entrepreneur of the Month is best known for a "Blue Book".
Looking toward the foot of Kentucky Avenue at the riverfront, many people have fond memories of a building that was not only a thriving business, but a part of Paducah’s history. You can actually read a few sentences of that history on one of our beautiful murals along the floodwall.
The company’s current CEO is a fourth generation member of its founding family…the family that founded Petter Supply Company on the banks of the Ohio River in 1890. Today, Bob Petter serves as Board Chairman and Robert Petter is the CEO.
Petter’s early focus was on the Marine Industry. Since that time, Petter Supply has become a full line Industrial Distributor. Petter Supply now focuses on Marine supplies, MRO supplies, material handling, and supplies for various industrial and manufacturing industries.
In 1997 Petter Supply moved their headquarters to their current location at 5110 Charter Oak Drive, Paducah, Kentucky. If you haven’t visited their beautiful facility, it’s endearing to see they took a piece of downtown with them …as one of the concrete steps is located right outside their front door.
Petter has six branch locations (Mt. Vernon, IL, Hopkinsville, KY, Owensboro, KY, Statesville, NC, Decatur, AL, and Channelview, TX).
They have three affiliate companies, Petter Packaging, also known as Apex Packaging of St. Louis, Hapsco Beltservice, and Petter Business Systems…which was formed in 1990…100 years after the Petter Supply was founded.
Unfortunately neither Mr. Petter nor company president John Sircy could join us for the presentation…instead they sent someone who they knew would be familiar to the marine industry.
Gayle McLeod is the VP of Sales for Petter and has a long history of serving the marine industry. Specifically, his history with Petter Supply dates 41 years this month.
We asked Gayle to please convey to the Petter family how much the Chamber and the community appreciate their entrepreneurial companies…and we thank them for calling Paducah “home.”

April 2010 Entrepreneur of the Month

(*Pictured L-R: Paducah Chamber Board Chair Helen Sims, Terry Reeves, EntrePaducah, Roger Truitt, Doug Truitt. Kalleo Technologies is a leading Managed IT Services company that specializes in the Healthcare Industry.
Essentially…Kalleo provides computer support for physicians’ offices. They offer a suite of services to their customers that includes 24-hour Network, Server, and Backups Monitoring, a comprehensive Help Desk, Vendor Management, HIPAA consulting and more.
Today Kalleo supports over 350 physicians and other health care providers and their staffs. Their service area now covers 10 states and they do all this efficiently with 11 people at their offices in the Ulrich Building in Paducah’s Information Age Park.
In 2006 Kalleo launched a line of IP Phone Systems for small business and currently has phone system customers in 4 states and is currently working on expanding its Managed IT Service offerings to other industries.
Kalleo was founded in 2004. Before starting Kalleo Technologies John and Doug had worked in the IT industry for many years, primarily working for large corporations with a specialty in remote management technologies. Some of their projects included the world’s largest implementations of Citrix and Wyse thin client technologies at SBC Wireless (now AT&T) and Wal-Mart.
They relocated their families from Dallas to Paducah in April of 2004. Roger Truitt retired in 2000 as President of ARCO Products, returning to his home town of Paducah.
I asked John the open ended question…what’s the best thing about being an entrepreneur…his answer... “the unlimited ability to be creative and build wealth.”
John, Doug and Roger…we wish you many more years of doing just that here in Paducah.
We appreciate you...and we're proud that you're our April Entrepreneur of the Month.

March Entrepreneur of the Month

(*Photo L-R: EntrePaducah Concierge Terry Reeves; Dr. Evelyn Jones; Paducah Chamber of Commerce Chair Helen Sims)
Photo: Bill Fox, FoxFotography

Perhaps you’ve seen this month’s Entrepreneur of the Month?
Some of you may have seen her very up close and personal during a visit to her office. You may have seen her speaking to your civic club…or your professional organization…or at a school function.
Speaking of school, perhaps you’ve seen her supporting school activities at Community Christian Academy where she’s been involved for the last 15 years…including as a member of the School Board for four years.
Or, maybe you’ve read a byline for this successful entrepreneur in Good Housekeeping, Skin & Aging, and Dermatology Times Magazines.
Most likely, you’ve seen Dr. Evelyn Jones and her staff at WellSprings Dermatology at the Livingwell Centre in Paducah.
In case you’re wondering about the clinic name, Dr. Jones says it was inspired by the Bible passage, Proverbs 4:23, “Above all else, guard your heart; it is the wellspring of life.”
Through her faith and her profession, she’s helped guard many a heart and body. Active in the Southwest Church of Christ, she and her family just two years ago traveled to Honduras to medically and spiritually minister to Hondurans. She’s a lifetime member of a group of physicians committed to serving The Skin Cancer Foundation’s mission and programs.
In her community, she is a former “Woman of the Year” as named by the Paducah Business & Professional Women’s group…and is an active member on the EntrePaducah Technology Think Tank.
As an entrepreneur, Dr. Jones opened her dermatology practice in 1993, and established the first Medical Spa in Paducah. Those businesses combined to form WellSprings in 2004 and currently employ 16 people. She and her husband Dr. Shawn Jones do a radio show Wednesday mornings at 9:00 AM on AM1450 called “The Jones Show” focusing on “Living the Principled Life.”
What’s there to enjoy about being an entrepreneur, I asked the Doctor? “The people.....my WellSprings co-workers and my patients.....because they encourage and stimulate me to be better and allow me the opportunity to serve in this community.
And serve she has…but she takes community spirit honestly. She credits her dear parents, Doctor Wally and (former Mayor) Gerry Montgomery as her source of inspiration.
Congratulations to Dr. Evelyn Montgomery Jones, the EntrePaducah and Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce March Entrepreneur of the Month!

*WellSprings Dermatology offers Board Certified Dermatology, practicing general and cosmetic dermatology. With ice covering hundreds of miles of data transmission lines, communication was halted at best, and in some cases data files were corrupted to the point of non-recovery. The secret behind why some companies operated seamlessly…and why some were down for weeks…is the topic of an upcoming free program.
The quarterly “Geek’s Night Out” program features John Truitt, President of Kalleo Technologies in Paducah. Truitt will share the current and future state of technology affecting data system continuity and backup.
“Geek’s Night Out” is scheduled for Tuesday evening March 23rd from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Red Lobster Restaurant in Paducah. Complimentary refreshments will be served prior to the meeting.
The program is sponsored by Murray State University’s POINT (Professional Organization of Information Network Technology) and EntrePaducah®. There is no registration fee, however reservations are suggested by calling (270) 443-1746 or email to info1@entrepaducah.com.

EntrePaducah...year one!

February 16, 2009 was the first of many datelines for EntrePaducah. It was my first day on the job and little did I know what a rewarding, challenging year it would be. As we enter our second year serving the community, I’d like to share some of EntrePaducah’s first year highlights.
One of the first tasks was to make ourselves known in the community. The EntrePaducah Advisory Board and Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce had already put this plan into motion, volunteering to conduct the first EntreForum® events in 2008. EntreForum events offer a no-cost, small group seminar for business assistance and networking. Since then, we’ve produced six EntreForum events, plus a Social Media Seminar for small businesses. EntrePaducah has also been quoted for several news stories on entrepreneurism, and I’ve shared our mission from time to time in this monthly publication. I’ve been welcomed as guest speaker at several civic clubs and community functions, including events that EntrePaducah co-sponsors such as the MSU-POINT meeting for IT professionals, and, various SBDC seminars. Our local government offices regularly refer business startup inquires to EntrePaducah, as does the Chamber of Commerce and GPEDC. Our visibility also extends to the web. Our website is www.entrepaducah.com where you’ll find a basic description of the organization and a link to our Blog. You can also “friend” us on Facebook.
Another of our missions at EntrePaducah is to network with other economic development agencies to help entrepreneurs identify as many beneficial resources as possible. Throughout the year, we’ve partnered with Murray State, the SBDC, GPEDC, Purchase ADD, KY Economic Development Cabinet and others to conduct public information sessions or simply meet one-on-one with entrepreneurs. Our partnership with Kentucky’s Department of Innovation & Commercialization (DCI) through the Kentucky Science & Technology Corporation (KSTC) has produced a substantial grant award to a local technology-driven company. By cooperating with our fellow economic development professionals, we hope to create a unity that is recognized state-wide as a model for economic growth. EntrePaducah’s focus on small business hopes to complement the GPEDC’s focus on industrial recruitment and the Chamber’s business advocacy, to offer 360 degrees of assistance to our business community.
Although perhaps not affected as much as other parts of the country, the recession did hit home at several local businesses in 2009. Of the approximately 70 clients EntrePaducah has worked with thus far, almost 20% of them were existing businesses needing various types of help to become stabilized. Being sensitive to the difficulty of job displacement, EntrePaducah reached out to dozens of laid-off workers to offer assistance should they attempt to open a new business.
Part of EntrePaducah’s focus is to help drive the creation of technology-driven business startups. Through a partnership with the Kentucky DCI and Murray State, EntrePaducah employed a Technology Concierge in July. Rich Davis came to EntrePaducah to work closely with local tech-related entrepreneurs. Rich’s arsenal includes knowledge of business plan preparation, a co-major in Information Management, and the resources of the KSTC for grant and investment capital opportunities. To help Rich identify and support those tech entrepreneurs, EntrePaducah’s Technology Think Tank was formed in October to offer their insight and resources. The twelve member group consists of professionals from the medical, agriculture, marine, energy, education and IT communities. Their volunteer involvement is yet another testament to the commitment many Paducah residents have to the future of their community.
Culture Change is another major initiative for EntrePaducah. Part of the philosophy of “home grown” economic development is to foster a culture that educates, promotes and supports entrepreneurs. One of the highlights of my year was judging the Farley Elementary Entrepreneurial Fair competition. Those fifth-grade students amazed me. Their knowledge of business planning, computing break-even points, and marketing was fascinating…especially for their age. Their teachers deserve a special thank you from EntrePaducah, and we urge them to tell others of their achievements. Culture Change will only come through a collective effort to teach our children economics and basic business principles. Knowledge is power, and we want our area students to have the confidence (power) to pursue business ownership, if it fits into their life plans. As the students grow, they’ll be ready for the advanced opportunities offered at local colleges. Murray State has recently devoted vast resources to its entrepreneurship program, and the West Kentucky Community & Technical College’s Emerging Technology Center will offer tech-driven entrepreneurs research opportunities. EntrePaducah is fortunate to have the support of both institutions as a resource for our clients.
Anther Culture Change initiative is offered through the Chamber of Commerce. At each month’s Power in Partnership Breakfast, we’ve joined the Chamber in saluting the Entrepreneur of the Month. Recognition of the efforts of our local entrepreneurs helps to let them know the community appreciates and supports them. It also sends a message to upcoming entrepreneurs, or those considering a move to Paducah, that our community is supportive of startups.
EntrePaducah’s vision began three years ago through a volunteer committee formed to help identify future economic development needs in the community. Today, our Advisory Board continues to guide and direct our activities…and open doors that give us the resources to help entrepreneurs. A state grant announced today in Paducah makes it easier for Genesis to bring their products to market.
Governor Steve Beshear announced an award of $30,000 for Genesis to use for further development of its “G-Drive” blood glucose meter communication device. EntrePaducah® worked with Genesis to submit a grant application to the Rural Innovation Fund managed by the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation in partnership with the Kentucky Council for Postsecondary Education and was notified of their award in early February. The Rural Innovation Fund, part of the Kentucky Enterprise Fund Program, provides grant and investment capital to seed-stage startup companies throughout Rural Kentucky.
Genesis Health Technologies, LLC developed a new method for diabetes patients to read and keep track of their blood glucose level. Its “G-Drive” device plugs into a cell phone and uploads the readings to a customized web portal that keeps track of the person’s history. The device allows patients to keep track of their glucose readings through the internet or text their readings to a doctor or parent. The mobile device no longer restricts patients to the traditional method of keeping journals.
“EntrePaducah’s mission is to support companies like Genesis. High-tech companies traditionally produce stable, professionally–compensated jobs in a community. We’re proud we could help them continue their efforts in Paducah,” EntrePaducah Board Chairman Phil McIntosh said.
Nathan G. Cross, Chief Financial Officer of Genesis Health Technologies, added, “We are very excited to be one of the few companies awarded this money, and we know that it will help our goal to ease the frustration diabetes patients suffer every day. We also appreciate EntrePaducah’s efforts in the community. Without their help, we may not have received or known about the grant program.”
EntrePaducah is Paducah-McCracken County’s central source for small business development and support. Only one award recipient is selected from each of the 13 participating states.
EntrePaducah’s goals of helping start-up businesses were quickly amended to extend to existing businesses affected by the recession. “In just a year, we’ve effectively become a central source for small business development in the Paducah area,” said EntrePaducah Board Chairman Phil McIntosh, “devoting resources specifically toward entrepreneurial businesses has made us a stronger community, despite the recession.”
Southern Growth Policies Board is a non-partisan public policy think tank based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Formed by the region's governors in 1971, Southern Growth Policies Board develops and advances visionary economic development policies by providing a forum for partnership and dialog among a diverse cross-section of the region's governors, legislators, business and academic leaders and the economic- and community-development sectors. This unique public-private partnership is devoted to strengthening the South's economy and creating the highest possible quality of life.
The 2010 Innovator Awards will be presented at Southern Growth's 2010 Chairman's Conference, Driving the Next 20 Years: Maximizing the New Automotive Industry in the South. Parallel to establishing B.A.’s shop, Frances became one of this area’s most well-known insurance agents. Together they raised their four children in this entrepreneurial environment…even opening a second location on Third Street in Paducah in 1984.

Frances retired from her agency about five year ago…B.A. about ten years ago. Of the four children, most of you know that their son Tony now runs the family business, B.A.’s Automotive. B.A.’s currently has 12 full-time employees and offers complete automotive service. How wonderful it must be to go to work every day under a sign that bears your Dad’s name…a constant reminder of your father’s business legacy!

The legacy that Tony is quick to mention, however, is the legacy of how he and his brothers and sisters were raised. “We were raised to work hard, be dedicated, and have faith…which, to me, is what being an entrepreneur is all about,” Tony told me.

Asked if he thinks he’s set a good example in the community, Tony graciously said, “I’m not sure if we’ve been an example…but we’ve tried to live our life as a positive example to others. We try to always do what’s right and reach out to those who need a hand.”

With five children of his own, Tony has learned firsthand about passing positive values down through the generations. That’s good for us to know. Hopefully, at least one of those five will continue the business legacy of their grandparents…right here in Paducah.

Congratulations to B.A., Frances and Tony Hamilton of B.A.’s Automotive…the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce and EntrePaducah “Entrepreneur of the Month” for February 2010.

B.A.’s Automotive Service, Inc. is located at 818 S. 3rd Street in Paducah. The Entrepreneur of the Month Award is given at each month’s Chamber Power in Partnership breakfast.

*(pictured left to right: EntrePaducah Concierge Terry Reeves; B.A. Hamilton; Frances Hamilton; Chamber Chair Helen Sims; Tony Hamilton)

photo: Fox Fotography

April 6th EntreForum: "Insure" the Date!

Get your morning off to a smart-start on Tuesday April 6th at the next EntreForum program.

A few months ago, I wrote an article for the Paducah Sun's Four Rivers Business Journal regarding "Insurance for Small Businesses". Last night's Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting filled the radar screen!
Let's start with the Chamber leadership. Outgoing 2009 Board Chair Susan Guess's day job is Vice President of Marketing at Paducah Bank. EntrePaducah receives support and encouragement from all our local banks, but, Susan (who also serves on the EntrePaducah Advisory Board) and the leadership at Paducah Bank have been especially supportive of the effort to develop and promote entrepreneurism in Paducah/McCracken County. We also appreciate Susan calling out EntrePaducah in her speech as one of the initiatives supported by the Chamber. We are proud to be a strategic and financial partner of the Chamber.
Incoming Chamber Board Chair Helen Sims and her family are local entrepreneurs as well, Founders and Owners of Superior Care Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Helen's inauguration speech last night reflected so many of the characteristics and values of true, successful entrepreneurs.
Chambers of Commerce are all about their members...and Paducah's Chamber is full of self-made local businesses. Winners of last night's awards are wonderful examples of entrepreneurism.
Three short years ago, in was difficult to go online to find a concise "community calendar" of events in the area. Mary Thorsby and Nikki May, winner of the Chamber's "Innovator Award", changed all that with ilistpaducah.com. Not only has "ilist" become a source of community event information, some of its other features have created a new culture in the area conducive to locals who see the beauty, value and potential of our great community. Their entrepreneurial spirit launched a service that's slowly becoming a legacy in the community.
Swift & Staley, Inc., led by entrepreneurs Bill and Pat Holsapple, was named "Business of the Year" for 2009 by the Chamber...a well-deserved honor for a company that supports its community in so many ways.
If there was ever a person to lead people up a hill to tackle a challenge, it would be John A. Williams, Sr., Founder of Computer Systems, Inc. (CSI). John Williams has tackled many challenges for his community and was appropriately honored with the Chamber's "Summit Award" in appreciation for his efforts. John's current project is an in-depth study of local poverty and the policies that govern the issue and how it affects our educational system. John's corporate and civic leadership is a classic example of entrepreneurism at its best!
Last night's Chamber event celebrates the year past, and sets the tone for the coming year. The tone we heard was one of a pragmatic approach to the country's economic factors...a tone of challenge to DO something to effect positive change...and a tone of optimism that sends a signal that Paducah and McCracken are ready, willing and able to support successful businesses!

What a great place to live (and do business)!

Despite a little snow on the roads, there was a full house at this morning's Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce "Power in Partnership" breakfast.
This month's program was the "State of the City/County" addresses from Mayor Bill Paxton and McCracken Judge Executive Van Newberry. Both leaders gave excellent presentations on accomplishments from the previous year, as well as a preview of the year ahead.
Both Paxton and Newberry addressed the need for city/county cooperation; economic development; fiscal responsibility; and quality of life. While those are the broad overview topics, both cited dozens of examples of accomplishments. The Mayor's presentation is now posted on the city's website .
EntrePaducah is proud to be one of the economic development agencies support by your city and county governments, and we thank them for being strategic and financial partners.
We're also proud to be part of this community. My friend Mary Thorsby at ilistpaducah.com often talk about the "New Paducah", and how fun it is to watch the transformation. Here's the column for January 2010,available on local newsstands now:

In the sea of gifts we hope you received last month, there is probably a calendar or two. I’d like to add to your calendar collection by offering a twelve month look at reminders for your small business.
By the way, there is no particular order to this calendar. The reminders can be inserted anywhere they seem appropriate for your business. The important thing is to remember to address the topics at some point during the year.
January offers a fresh start to a new year (assuming your books are on a Jan.-Dec. year). It also is the first month of the usually slow first quarter of business which makes it a good opportunity to conduct a Supplier Review. Make appointments with vendor reps, review contracts and reacquaint yourself with contract terms, expiration dates and pricing.
Remember (how could you forget?) the ice storm last year. February reminds us to meet with our insurance advisor. Most insurance advisors say that as situations change, so do insurance needs. Premium adjustments, coverage limits, company growth (or downsize) could all affect coverages and company budgets.
As a baseball fan, I’ll have to throw in a Spring Training analogy for the month of March. Get your team ready for the nine remaining months of the year. Most businesses are more active in summer, so March offers a good time to conduct personnel reviews and meet with managers or partners about future staffing needs.
Spring marks a good time to perhaps consider new opportunities for your company. Are you maximizing your current facilities and workforce? Should you be proactive in responding to trends in the market, or should you stay the course of your Business/Strategic Plan. What would a competitive review show in your market? Mark the month of April to examine your Business/Strat plans and make sure everyone is aware, and shares the company’s goals.
By May, April 15th is a not-so-distant memory. Arrange a meeting of your CPA and your accounting team to review the previous year’s tax return. Have the team identify the previous year’s mistakes, if any, and what adjustments might be in store in the year to come.
How many company-produced manuals are on your shelf? When’s the last time anyone looked at them? Make June the month for policy and procedure review. Plant/building safety, personnel policies, compliance issues, even manuals written for third parties such as franchisees or distributors should be reviewed at least yearly.
Are there any property issues that need to be reviewed by your company? Use July to review leases, rents or even mortgages to determine if changes need to be made. Have property values increased or declined? Does your current location adequately fit your needs…or needs that could arise soon? Has your property been reassessed, meaning additional taxation to budget?
Although the majority of businesses review their finances monthly, August is just past the mid-year point. Take a close look at the January through June numbers to detect any trends year-to-date and from previous years. Were first and second quarter opportunities optimized or is there still some catching up to do? A mid-year review allows companies to consider course correction…or affirmation of existing business.
What worked in the summer months and what didn’t? Those are good questions for the Marketing Department in September. Reviewing marketing practices in September allows a fresh review of successes or failures year to date, and, gives adequate time to prepare for the next year. If you reviewed your sales goals in August, September fits well for a marketing review since “marketing is the means by which you achieve your sales goals.”
Is your company a good Corporate Citizen? Make October the month to review your company’s community and charity efforts. Take a poll of employees to determine their interests in regard to charities and community involvement. Review your memberships in organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce or your support for local economic development efforts that may have helped your business. As the business owner, consider your availability to serve or participate in community and/or charitable efforts. At a minimum, research your community’s networking opportunities for possible involvement.
If you operate a manufacturing or production facility, how’s your equipment working? That’s a good question for your Operations Team in November. Review the year’s maintenance and repair records and see where inefficiencies may be. Determine whether a repair crew can work around production, or if a maintenance shut-down is required. Another advantage to November Ops review is identifying any equipment purchases that may offer tax or cash flow relief if bought in the current or next fiscal year.
In December, buy all new computers. Okay, I got your attention but here’s the point. Schedule a yearly Tech Review or risk actually buying new a bunch of new computers. Computers are work horses and often taken for granted. Most IT Departments have their hands full maintaining the company’s network and have to make time for random repairs. Allowing them time to do routine maintenance…software updates, disk cleanup, etc…allows for efficiencies when you need your equipment the most. For instance, a retailer’s worst nightmare would be a computer crash on black Friday! The status of file retention (back-ups, off-site storage, etc.) is also an important factor to review. Also, with many employees taking time off for the holidays IT professionals often have easier access to computers and networks with fewer users around.
Again, the exact months mentioned are relative to your particular business. Scheduling, however, is the key to insure all aspects of your business are reviewed on, at least, a yearly basis.
From Rich Davis, our Technology Concierge, and me, we wish you a very happy and successful 2010!

Happy New Year!

Hello EntrePaducah followers!
We hope the holidays have offered you one of the greatest gifts...some quiet time. We'll typically do multiple postings just to make sure we've shared with everyone!
Just today, we posted some great (short) articles on our Facebook Fan Page regarding such topics as small business funding; new entrepreneurial endeavors; and New Year's resolutions for businesses in the "new economy".
Thanks for helping EntrePaducah get off to a enthusiastic start in 2009...we look forward to working with our local entrepreneurs in 2010 and beyond!

Hope you enjoyed EntreForum...

Thanks everyone who attended the December EntreForum program this week.

20 Guests joined us for some great information on Accounting and Legal tips for starting new businesses. He has served on the Governor’s Commission for Small Business Advocacy and…he holds five U.S. patents for inventions that he shares with Pepsi Cola Mid-America for a beverage dispensing apparatus.

As a graduate of Heath High School and Murray State, Todd, thank goodness, stayed close to home and just opened in a new location at 612 Broadway…just a few blocks up from his old location.

Oh, and there’s another entrepreneur in the Duff household…his wife Laura is a consummate chef and does catering through her business “A Pampered Palette.”

Todd has served as a faithful mentor for the EntreForum program of EntrePaducah and we’re proud to recognize him as the December Entrepreneur of the Month.

November "Entrepreneur of the Month"...GEO Consultants

EntrePaducah and the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce congratulate our November "Entrepreneur of the Month"...the husband and wife team of Jeff and Sharon Douthitt, founders of GEO Consultants, LLC.

Jeff and Sharon founded GEO in July 1997 and started their first contract a Cape Canaveral Air Station in Florida in February 1998.

(pictured L-R...Terry Reeves, EntrePaducah; Helen Simms, Chamber Chair-Elect; Sharon and Jeff Douthitt)

GEO Consultants is an environmental services and geological engineering firm created to serve clients with environmental, energy and water supply needs.

As do many entrepreneurs, Jeff and Sharon left successful careers with large technology-based firms to start GEO. They're both active in Chamber of Commerce activities and share EntrePaducah's vision of promoting entrepreneurism. The EntreForum session offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to hear from local professionals like Sam and Mike, and network with other entrepreneurs about similar issues.
One of "Entre Man's" (search for him on Facebook!) favorite parts of the program are the refreshments. Local entrepreneur Laura Duff's "A Pampered Palate" caters this month's event.
If you're thinking about starting a new business, or in the critical start-up phase, we'd love to have you attend. It was a great mix of marketing professionals, business and professional-types who wanted to learn more about the phenomenon called social media.
Like so many people, I am fascinated with the speed with which the "viral" aspect of social media has so affected the way we view marketing. Having worked in either TV, Radio, or Marketing since I was 17 (34 years) I've watched the evolution of mass media to social media...and that's why I use the adjective "phenomenon". In literally seconds, we can change the way a product is perceived by hundreds of thousands (eventually millions) of people around the world. Because of the sheer strength of social media, segments of it have become very sophisticated (not necessarily complicated, just sophisticated)...and to quote Seinfeld, "not that there's anything wrong with that!" That sophistication has been created by tech-driven businesses...to help small businesses...which often spawns other small businesses. That's what EntrePaducah is all about!
So, at this point, I'm preaching to the choir. You likely wouldn't be reading this blog if YOU weren't aware of what social media can do for business marketing. Hopefully, you picked up some tips yesterday that will help your business grow.
Our presenters were great. Glynn Mangold, Professor of Marketing at Murray State University, shared some of the origin and philosophy of Social Media Marketing (SMM). BTW, he's teaching a class in the spring on SMM and his class is seeking local businesses to work with his class on building their social media campaigns. Interested??? Contact Glynn at Murray State.
Susan Guess, VP of Marketing at Paducah Bank, and the bank's SMM Consultant William Sledd discussed why and how their bank entered into the social media world. Technically, because of banking industry regulations, they can't "advertise" bank services. But as they explained, they can certainly begin a social network dialogue with their customers...and potential customers. William would be happy to share information on how to get started with social media.
And, as always, Todd Duff of IVS Websites, Inc., shared a little magic while making very valid points about SMM. He and Account Rep. Kate Light (EntrePaducah's web consultant), discussed how SMM can stand alone for some businesses, but that it's wise to use an integrated approach to marketing. The integrated part includes SMM, website, and mass media.
We also had a guest appearance by our good friends and founders of http://www.ilistpaducah.com/, Mary Thorsby and Nikki May. A few years ago, there was very little web or social media presence in Paducah. iListPaducah.com paved the way for both web-based and social media users in this area...and has shed light on a whole new Paducah sub-culture (Mary and I call it "The New Paducah").
It was a pleasure to co-sponsor the event with Chris Wooldridge of the regional Small Business Development Council.
My good friend Bill Fox reminded me yesterday that less than a year ago, I made the famous quote "I don't have time for that Facebook stuff."
I'll have a little Tabasco on that crow I'm eating :)

Blogging for fun...Rain

We're always telling you about something new that's happening at EntrePaducah or in the entrepreneurial world.
Today Bloggers, let's have some fun.
It seems like it's been cloudy or raining here for weeks. If you have, you know it's time well spent. The Chamber was gracious in giving the October program to EntrePaducah. After updating chamber members and guests on EntrePaducah's activities for the year, it was my pleasure to launch the first "Entrepreneur of the Month" award (see next blog post).
It was also my pleasure to introduce a new friend to the audience, our keynote speaker Ankur Gopal of Owensboro, Kentucky.
Ankur is the quintessential entreprenuer. Already operating his third company, Ankur scouts for current "needs" then pursues technology (and a business) to meet those needs. His latest venture, Agent511, is a mobile communications solutions company focusing on text messaging. Ankur gave an outstanding speech about the power of text communications, and inspired the crowd with his passion for staying in his home state of Kentucky.
It became evident why "Power in Partnership" is such an appropriate name for the monthly get-together. The Chamber's partnership with EntrePaducah allowed EntrePaducah to showcase Ankur Gopal's company Agent511. After the meeting, Ankur was inundated with business cards from businesses and others from this area wanting to know more about mobile solutions. Ultimately, wouldn't it be great if Ankur (and other tech-driven businesses like his) chose Paducah to open headquarters or satellite offices.
There is Power in Partnership.

College Classes for Entreprenuers being formed now!

If you attended this morning's EntreForum session, you heard my friend Tom Prigge of West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) offer a sweet deal on college level courses!
In cooperation with EntrePaducah and the Kentucky WINS program, WKCTC is prepared to offer three classes to entrepreneurs in the region, possibly at very reduced rates.
Here's the deal...WKCTC and EntrePaducah have identified three courses that seem to be of most interest to entreprenuers/small business owners. They are:
-Human Resources Essentials
-Marketing
-Finance for Non-financial Managers
These classes are taught "on demand" by WKCTC staff once a minimum number of twelve people sign-up for any one class. The price for all three classes combined would be $1208, HOWEVER, students may get a rebate from Kentucky WINS which would make their total cost (after rebate) $422. If the rebates were to be denied, students may cancel or continue at full price.
With tighter budgets, more companies are turning to DIY approaches to HR, marketing and accounting. These are also three very relevant topics to entrepreneurs...especially during their critical start-up stage.
If interested, contact Terry Reeves at EntrePaducah at (270)443-1746 or info1@entrepaducah.com.

Social Media for Small Biz Seminar

If you're reading this, you're already aware of social media marketing. However, as fast as technology changes...so do the rules of engagement!

That's why we're doing our part to help small businesses jump into the world of social media marketing by offering a free seminar on the topic.
We're kicking off the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce Trade Show with a Social Media for Small Business Seminar Thursday, October 22nd from 1:00-2:00 PM at the Paducah Expo Center.

You'll hear from:
-Susan Guess, VP of Marketing @ Paducah Bank, and the bank's social media consultant William Sledd. They'll discuss how a conservative world of banking is reaching customers via social media marketing.
-Glynn Mangold, Professor of Marketing at Murray State University. Glynn's class offerings at Murray State on Social Media Marketing and Consulting are preparing college students for the wired business world they're about to enter.
-Todd Duff & Kate Light of IVS Website Development of Paducah. Todd and Duff will give an overview (not a sell job!) of what they share with their clients about social media...primarily how to manage the different outlets and make them all work together for the best ROI.
-EntrePaducah's Terry Reeves will moderate. As Corporate Communcations Director of Dippin' Dots, Terry helped the ice cream make launch its social media presence which, today, rivals food giants McDonald's and Subway in total Friends (900k +).

The program is free, however, reservations are suggested. The second most frequest question is, "How do I write one?"
Join us for the next EntreForum where we'll take an in-depth look at the whole concept of business plans.

Presenters for the session are Chris Wooldridge, a former banker, who now serves as Director of the Small Business Development Council efforts in far Western Kentucky. Also on the panel is Kerri Brotherson, one of Paducah Bank's SBA loan specialists. Joining them will be EntrePaducah's own Richard Davis who assists our clients with business planning.

The team will address the basics of business plans: Who needs one? What should the plan include? When should I develop the plan? Where do I seek help...and where to take my plan when it's complete? Why do I need one?

Following their brief presentations, the team will be available for questions and answers. The moves were part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), which was signed into law by President Obama in mid-February. So far, the SBA has used about 55% of those funds; they have translated to $6 billion in loans under the 7(a) and 504 programs, says John J. Miller, an SBA spokesman.

However, barring another act of Congress, SBA-backed loans will revert to their pre-Recovery Act status by the end of November or December, Miller says. The impact will be palpable. Loans made once the funds run out will only get a 75% to 85% guarantee, down from 90%. The decrease will make it tougher to get approved for a loan because lower guarantees raise a bank's risk, says Eric Grimstead, a business advisor at the Center for Economic Vitality at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash. In addition, business owners taking out loans through the SBA loan will have to pay a 2% to 3% loan guarantee fee again, he says.
November is more than two months away, but given that the SBA loan approval process can take as long as 120 days, applicants had better get cracking, says Dave Mulcahy, the director of the Small Business Development Center at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.
Here are six ways to speed up the application process for SBA loans:
Update your financials
To accelerate a loan's approval, prepare and provide at least three years of tax returns and up-to-date financial statements, including income and cash-flow statements, balance sheets and sales projections, says Tom Burke, the senior vice president of Wells Fargo SBA lending in Minneapolis. If you don't have a business plan, write one. And if you don't have a marketing plan, write one of those too, he says. "Business owners have to be able to show that they can pay everyone back," Burke says. (Click here for the SBA's loan application checklist.)
Tap a preferred lender
Use a preferred SBA lender such as TD Banknorth or KeyBank, Grimstead says. Conventional wisdom says business owners should consult a bank with which they already work, but if that institution doesn't currently work with SBA loan programs, the process can be take weeks longer than comparable loans at SBA-ready lenders, he says. Not only is there a massive learning curve when working with SBA programs, which are complex and change frequently, but nonpreferred lenders also have to send loans into the SBA for approval, which can take up to four weeks, Burke says. Conversely, preferred lenders are generally able to underwrite their own SBA loans, he says.
Ensure the right fit
When scanning the list of preferred lenders, find ones that cater to businesses like yours, Burke says. For instance, some banks won't authorize SBA loans to start-ups. Others may avoid restaurants or other similarly risky ventures, he says. Also, take into account differences in banks' credit policies. For instance, Wells Fargo will extend a real estate loan for 25 years, but other banks do so for just 20 years.
Hedge your bets
Even if you secure the word of a preferred lender, make sure you've applied to a couple other banks backups, Grimstead says. "Some borrowers get three or six or even 12 weeks into the process only to get a 'no' from someone at the bank," he says. To slash your risk of rejection, apply to a few different banks at the same time. (Note that going through the application process at several banks will not harm your credit, says Mulcahy, from the SBDC in Beaumont, Texas.)
Offer more backup
SBA loan programs often require less of a down payment than typical business loans, says Becky Naugle, the state director for the Kentucky Small Business Development Center at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. For instance, banks providing normal business loans might require owners to put 20% to 40% down, but banks working through an SBA program might require just 10% down. Despite this lower standard, consider putting more down or offering some sort of personal guarantee, she says. "If particularly risky business owners can mediate a [bank's] risk by having a personal guarantee, that could push it through faster," she says.
Get help
An experienced business advisor can also help push your company's loan through quicker, Burke says. Check out a local Small Business Development Center, or tap a volunteer business professional in your area via SCORE, a nonprofit business counseling service, he says. There's also at least one SBA district officer in each state whom business owners can ask questions about SBA loans.

Amazing things in the Paducah area...

As we observe six months "in the saddle" at EntrePaducah, word continues to spread about the services we bring to local entrepreneurs.

During this time, we've been privileged to get first-hand information and tours of various entities in our community such as Paducah Power System, USEC, the WKCTC Emerging Technology Center and more! We heard Bob Hoppman of the Pasta House talk about his marketing philosophies. Among the great advice he shared..."the most important person to market to is the one sitting in your restaurant!" Bob made the point that marketing begins at the point of sale...if you've done everything RIGHT at the store level, then you're ready to "spread the word" through mass marketing.
Sandra Wilson of NewPage Corporation in Wickliffe shared with us the importance of companies being involved in their communities...a concept known as "Cause Marketing." Sandra discussed how NewPage not only invests in local support of the arts, but how its employees and the company contribute to six different charities.
Our panelist (via Skype) from Los Angeles was Van Vandegrift of matrixx, LLC...a branded entertainment marketing firm. Van and I worked together during my years at Dippin' Dots on several national promotions and campaigns. Van shared with the group the importance of social network marketing...and how to maximize the effort for the greatest return on investment (ROI). Our thanks to Van for donating a door prize of a free social media evaluation for one of our Mentees.
As always, thanks to our mentors who attended who always provide great counsel and advice to our budding entrepreneurs.
Watch the next blog post for details on our next EntreForum program!

Let's talk Marketing!

We hope we have a spot on your calendar for Monday August 3rd...5:00 PM...for EntreForum. We're meeting in the theatre of Crounse Hall on the WKCTC campus.
Wanted to share what we'll be talking about...and who will join us for the conversation.
If you live in the area, you've probably heard "The Godfather" (or "God-foddah") commercials for The Pasta House Restaurant in Paducah. Local Pasta House owner Bob Hoppman is the mastermind behind those spots...and many other marketing efforts. We'll hear Bob talk about why he does what he does in regard to marketing...and when and where he does it!
Did you ever wonder why you see "ads" for companies that don't really have a product or service you can buy over the counter? There are good reasons for being a good "corporate citizen" and Sandra Wilson, Public Affairs Manager for NewPage of Wickliffe, KY, discusses how (and why) companies engage in Cause Marketing.
Joining us via Skype from Los Angeles will be Van Vandegrift, owner of matrixx, LLC. Van and I worked closely together in the past on social marketing projects, branded entertainment marketing (Hollywood marketing!), and licensing projects. If you've ever wondered "how do I get my product on TV" or want to know about friending and tweeting, you'll benefit from Van's conversation.
I'll be hosting and moderating the discussion...and throwing my two cents in :) As Corporate Communications Director for 12 years at Dippin' Dots, Inc., I was offered a great opportunity (and learning experience) on marketing one of the world's most unique products.
We'll have refreshments from Artisan Kitchen...and plenty of quiet time afterward for you to chat with any of our mentors about specific issues regarding your business start-up.
Hope to see you Monday!

EntrePaducah™ Opens Tech-Biz Support Office

EntrePaducah now offers services designed specifically for business start-ups focused on technology.

Through a partnership with the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation and Murray State University, EntrePaducah’s Technology Concierge offers hands-on business counseling for tech-driven businesses, especially those in the crucial start-up stage.
